OSWEGO, NY (June 10, 2018 ) - It was a disappointing second race of the season to say the least for Proud Motorsports and driver Camden Proud this past weekend at the Oswego Speedway as an early race crash took the Step One Creative No. 54 out of contention in the 30-lap ‘Spring Championship’ event for the Pathfinder Bank SBS.
Proud showed speed all evening long, turning sub 19 second laps in time trials before fighting for a fourth place finish in his heat race to grab a handicap starting spot and in turn line up seventh for the feature event.
“I thought we were in great position for the feature,” offered Proud. “I knew we had a strong car in the heat race, it just needed to be tightened up a little bit. I figured we would be battling for spots inside the top five all race long.”
Instead, Proud took the sixth spot on the start, and while trying to pass for fifth, charged to the low side going into turn number three, but instead of cracking the top five, ended up resting against the inside hub rail.
“It was a racing deal, but I am disappointed to have a torn up car,” Proud commented. “It has not been a fun start to the year. I wear my heart on my sleeve and don’t like to see us get wrecked. I knew we had a lot of strong cars behind us, so it was only a matter of time before they showed me a wheel. I knew I had to go, so I made an aggressive move and it just didn’t work out.”
The No. 54 sustained heavy right front damage including the wheel, spindle, upper control arm, and perhaps more pending further inspection this afternoon. Proud and team will repair the car and return to the track this coming Saturday, June 16.
“I felt like we had a top five car at worst,” Proud said. “It really stinks to have a couple of good runs slip away to start the season, but it’s early and our car is very, very fast. We are due for a good run next week and should be starting up front. I’m anticipating being able to contend for the win and want to thank my crew in advance for all of the hard work that will be put in this week. There’s a lot more lows than highs in this sport, so we write it off and move on.”
With two races in, Proud unofficially sits eleventh in the 2018 ‘Road to the Championship’ for the Pathfinder Bank SBS division and will certainly have a starting spot towards the front of the pack should he handicap into this coming Saturday’s 30-lap main event presented by Burke’s Do It Best Homecenter and Bosco’s.
