OSWEGO, NY (May 31, 2022) - Camden Proud debuted his new Supermodified ride for 2022; the former Doug Didero No. 3, with a fourth place in last Saturday night’s 75-lap Jim Shampine Memorial event for the Novelis Supermodifieds.
It was the third career top ten finish and first career top five finish for Proud, who says he used the duration of Saturday night’s program simply to get acclimated to the Ken’s Body Shop No. 54 machine.
“We started way behind the eight ball with no seat time at all prior to raceday, so I wanted to use Saturday just to get comfortable in the car,” Proud said. “I got 25 laps of warmups in before heat racing and had it down to a couple 16.7's - which was alright, but not as good as I'd have liked. The car was pretty free all night long and I didn't like that with so few laps on it, so after taking it easy in our heat race, we threw bigger swings at it to get more snug for the feature.”
Proud started the 75-lapper in the 13th position and found himself a distant tenth place following a handful of early caution flags.
However, towards the halfway point, Camden was able to pick up speed, and after a couple of passes and a hard lap 42 crash for Dave Shullick Jr. and Dave Danzer, found himself inside the top five behind Brandon Bellinger, Dan Connors Jr, Lou LeVea Jr, and Joe Gosek.
“I was pretty apprehensive at the start, but towards halfway, I was able to get into a rhythm that worked for me and that was the first time all night that I started to get comfortable,” mentioned Proud. “It's unfortunate that so many yellows had plagued what started out to be a good race. I think without all of the attrition, we were an eighth to tenth place car, but either way, it was nice to get up inside the top five. Sometimes it can really benefit you to just keep your nose clean.”
When the race finally got restarted after a lengthy red flag, Bellinger and Connors pulled away from the field, but Camden kept up a steady pace with Gosek and LeVea Jr. Unfortunately, his momentum was halted with 12 laps remaining when the left rear watts link bar snapped in half, leading to a bad vibration and an ill-handling race car.
“I think we had a legitimate shot at a podium at the end, but just as I had the chance to get a bit of experience at the front, I picked up a small vibration with about 30 laps to go and that slowed us down,” Proud added. “After the watts link broke, it felt like I was driving over potholes for the last 12 laps, but we limped home. It was way off the pace and I probably should have pulled in, but glad to have finished and avoided all of the mayhem. It is cool to get a top five in the Jimmy Shampine Memorial and hopefully we can build on things from here.”
The Novelis Supermodifieds will have the night off this Saturday, June 4, as the first of three Oswego Winged Super Challenge events takes center stage alongside the Pathfinder Bank SBS and J&S Paving 350 Supers.
Proud’s next time behind the wheel of the No. 54 Supermodified will be at the Friday, June 10 Fast Friday session, which will be used as a shakedown for the Novelis Supermodified Twin 35 special presented by Compass Credit Union on Saturday, June 11.
“We have a ton of work ahead learning about this race car and getting it setup to go faster, but I saw a couple glimpses of what I think we are going to be capable of last weekend, so I am very excited to see how things progress starting with testing next Friday,” Proud concluded.
